Jamie is 17 years old.
He lived with his dad for the first 14 and a half years of his life, since his mom died when he was just a kid. He doesn't really remember it, and his dad refuses to talk about it. What he knows about her is limited to dusty photo albums in the attic.
Now he lives with his aunt, Maddy. She's only 9 years older than Jamie. It's complicated and things are often pretty rough at home. Jamie spends as much time as possible out of house, even going as far as sleeping in the park or under the bridge by the river when things are really bad.
Jamie suffers from severe depression. He's been bounced from medication to medication. They seem to help for a while, but then things get worse and the docs make him switch again.
It doesn't help when he has dreams - or are they nightmares? - about his mother's death, his father's not-so-friendly ways, his destined failure.
When Jamie was 14 years old, he was cutting. He was at it for four months before he cut too deep and Gabe, his best friend, had to call for an ambulance.
When Jamie was 16, he got horrendously drunk at the beach and waded out into the ocean. He couldn't swim. There was no lifeguard on duty. Gabe pulled him out.
Needless to say, Jamie owes a lot to his best friend. But even so, it doesn't stop Jamie from falling into a worse and worse state of mind. As hard as he tries, for Gabe's sake mostly, he can't seem to get happy.
The one thing that does seem to pull him back is Marshall. Jamie feels like a sort of mentor/brotherly figure to Moosh, who lives in a household far crazier than his own. It's a wake-up call sometimes when Jamie looks at Marshall and is able to see who has it worse and handles it better.
