"Yeah. Mine too." She says distantly.

"She'd read it out loud from her copy and make me follow it with my own. She was the only one in my family who tried to help me with..." He trailed off, lost in thought.
"Well, it didn't work. I still can't read the properly."

"You can learn. Everyone can." She said, ignoring thoughts of her own sister.
"Try."

Lucas stared at the open page in front of him and began reading.
"One summer, along about 1904, my father rented a camp on a lake in Maine and took us all there for the month of August." He read slowly. One sentence right.
"We all got -" He stopped, staring at the word on the page. The letters were all mixed up. He couldn't figure it out.

"Take a breath, close your eyes, and then look at the next sentence."

Lucas did as Lilah told him. He read the sentence again.
"We all got... ringworm from some kittens and had to burn Pond's tact on our arms and legs night and morning, the vacation was a success -" He stopped there, rubbing his eyes. He'd definitely skipped a line, and read some words wrong.
"God damnit." He swore under his breath.

"Go back and try again." She said in a calm tone.

"I don't want to." Lucas grumbled, slamming the book shut.
"What's the point? My teachers know I can't do it, I know I can't do it, and my parents know I can't do it. I may as well call it quits now."

"Youre one of the smartest kids in the school. Of course you can do it." Lilah responded, worry in her tone.

Lucas shook his head. "No, not when it comes to this."
He slid his books back into his backpack, but remained seated at the table. Aside from Ben and his family, Lilah was the only other person to know he had dyslexia. It felt... Nice to be around someone who he could be honest with. Even if she was the competition.
"I've only just scraped my way through English over the years because my parents hired readers, tutors and scribes for me."

"They care a lot about you." Lilah commented, looking down at her notebook and biting her lip.

"They care about me going to the university they choose. They care about their reputation as prestigious members of the community. The sooner I'm out of the picture, the happier they'll be, as long as I become a doctor or lawyer or something classy like that." Lucas shrugged.
He brushed a hand through his hair. "They don't care about what I want."

"A lot of families dont." Lilah shrugged. "My parents dont even look at my report card."

"You're lucky. My parents are obsessed with my grades. If I don't get accepted to Stanford or Princeton this year, I'll be disowned."

"Trust me, it's not luck." She sighed, but then looked at her phone. "Sessions up for today. Same time tomorrow?"
