Lilah is a lucky girl. Her family is not badly off financially. She has wonderful friends that she hangs out with constantly. She gets an amazing education from the Academy. She has a wonderful family that gets along perfectly. Her boyfriend is perfect.
Yeah, some of those are true. The last two? Not so much. All her parents do is fight. Most nights she spends sharing her sisters bed, trying to block it all out. And that's the only time her sister is even nice to her. Otherwise she's just the obnoxious little sister who's always in the way. But when the screams down the hall get to their room, Abby is always willing to comfort Lilah. And when you can hear her father throwing things and slapping their mother, Abby is always there to block Lilah's ears and hold her close.
Those things Lilah could live with. She'd always done it before. Go to school and pretend like she got sleep the night before. Cover up the bags under her grey eyes. Smile like nothings wrong, and laugh along at lunch to the jokes her friends made. Be normal.
Lilah never wanted to live like her mother. But thats where the next lie comes in. Her boyfriend is far from perfect. Sure, he was perfect the first 3 months, but then? Then you saw the anger... the hate in his eyes. It started with a push. Then a shove. Then a grab. Then a slap.
No, she's not still in love with him. She's not one of those desperate girls. Though she does love the snippets of his old self from time to time that she gets. Lilah tried to leave him. Multiple times. But he hit her that much harder. She tried to ask her sister for advice, but her sister told her to leave the drama behind and leave her alone. She'd never tell her friends... they see her as perfect. They all do at school.
She's stuck. She's stuck in a dangerous relationship that she has to cover up every single second. But what can she do? She's learned to feel for her mom, and not just look down on her for not leaving her father. Her mother is stuck too. What can you do to get out of this position? Nothing if no one will listen to you. So she gave up trying.
She could tell her parents, but they wouldnt care. Besides, they have their own problems. Everyone does. So why bore them with hers? She'd much rather wear hoods and hide her face in her hair everyday than have anyones pity. Lilah was always strong like that. But shes just not strong enough to get rid of him.
